KUCHING (April 10): Young Sarawak talent Aleysha Shareef Van Der Horst has departed for Italy on Thursday ahead of the 17th Sanremo Junior World Finals, where she hopes to bring pride to both Sarawak and Malaysia at the prestigious international singing competition.
The 12-year-old qualified for the finals through auditions held earlier this year, with results announced in late January.
She has since undergone intensive vocal training under coach Dewi Liana Seriestha in preparation for the contest.
The Sanremo Junior World Finals attracts talented young singers from around the world, with many past participants going on to build successful careers in the performing arts.
This year’s competition will be held at the iconic Ariston Theatre, a globally renowned venue for music.
Aleysha said she is excited and grateful for the opportunity, especially after receiving an encouraging message from State Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah upon her arrival in Italy.
In his message, Abdul Karim said he prayed for her success and hoped she would add another achievement to her growing list, noting that the exposure would help further develop her talent and character.
He also expressed hope that Aleysha and her brother Ryan Zachary would continue to develop their potential should they pursue careers in the international music industry.
Aleysha’s mother, Shirley Hasmani Datuk Eddie, expressed appreciation for the minister’s support and the ministry’s sponsorship of her daughter’s participation.
Besides the competition, Aleysha is also expected to serve as a cultural ambassador for Sarawak during Finals Week, promoting the state’s diverse heritage and tourism attractions while networking with fellow contestants, industry professionals, composers and producers.
