BETONG (Feb 4): Hosting the fourth edition of Sukan Sarawak (Suksar IV 2026) is a boon for Betong and Sri Aman divisions, attracting visitors from outside the area while boosting local economic development, said Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong.
He noted that Suksar has successfully drawn athletes, officials, and supporters from beyond Betong Division, while promoting the area as a sports tourism destination.
“Events such as Suksar provide an opportunity to promote rural areas, not only to local tourists but also to visitors from outside Sarawak, especially through sports,” he told reporters after the Games launching ceremony here.
Meanwhile, Krian assemblyman Friday Belik said the event has had a significant positive impact on traders and small-scale hawkers in Betong, as the influx of visitors creates additional income opportunities throughout the tournament.
“The hosting of Suksar has a major impact on the local community, especially traders and small hawkers.
“Although many operate on a seasonal basis, the presence of athletes and visitors provides them with the opportunity to increase their income,” he said.

His views were echoed by local trader Syamsyuriadi Zainudin, who said Suksar has directly contributed to higher sales, particularly for food and beverage businesses.
“During Suksar, sales increase because many athletes and visitors come to Betong. This helps small traders like us,” he said.
