KUCHING (Feb 6): Taman Sahabat is shining brighter not only with lights, but also with life as it gears up for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the lighting ceremony marks the completion of the final upgrading stage for Taman Sahabat.

He added that the works involved comprehensive rewiring and improvements to the park’s lighting, resulting in a noticeably brighter environment.

“We have done all the rewiring and all the improvement on the lighting so you can actually see that this is much brighter,” he told reporters during the decorative lighting ceremony at Taman Sahabat here.

The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Wee said decorative lighting has also been installed ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations to make the park more vibrant, transforming it into a more inviting public space, especially at night.

“As what we have promised to the public, we will continue to improve the spaces and all the parks in Kuching under the Kuching South City Council (MBKS),” he said.

In conjunction with the festivities, a Chinese New Year Bazaar themed “Right to Richest” is also being held at the park.

“This is the third one that MBKS is organising this year,” he said.

He noted that while the celebration is usually held at Kenyalang Park, it has expanded to Taman Sahabat this year, with another bazaar set to take place at Padungan.

“I think every area they have their own crowds. They attract different types of crowd in order to patronise the place,” he added.

According to Wee, the Chinese New Year bazaar at Taman Sahabat features between 36 and 40 stalls, offering a variety of creative food options.

Families and friends were seen relaxing and soaking in the festive atmosphere at the bazaar. With Chinese New Year fast approaching, many are taking the opportunity to gather with their loved ones in the true spirit of the celebration.
