Unimas students present outcomes of Kpg Peros Sulam project

KOTA SAMARAHAN (Jan 8): A total of 106 students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday presented the outcomes of their Service Learning Malaysia (Sulam) project for Kampung Peros in Krokong, Bau.

Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts lecturer Candida Jau Emang said the project involved three main programmes under the faculty, with students’ work being returned to the community.

“The project involved students from the cinematography, art and design technology, and fine art programmes.

“It focuses on the production of creative content and social media promotion for the community, and community murals as expressions of identity and heritage, including short documentary films based on a participatory documentary approach,” she said in a speech.

She said aside from personal development, the Sulam project was also about learning and listening to the voices of the community.

“From the community’s perspectives, the project is expected to increase the visibility of Kampung Peros, support sustainable tourism initiatives, and strengthen pride in local cultural identity.

“From the students’ perspective, they undergo an authentic learning experience that requires ethical communication, cultural sensitivity, and professional responsibility when working with real communities,” she added.

Candida also expressed her appreciation to the Kampung Peros community for their warm welcome throughout the implementation of the project, and for sharing their space, time, and knowledge.

During the presentation at the university’s Dewan Seminar Pitas, the students also highlighted tourism-focused efforts to promote and enhance the Bung Podad hiking trail, including mural painting in the village and gotong-royong (work party) activities.

The project began in early October last year, involving 30 community members and seven lecturers, as well as 18 cinematography, 52 fine art, and 36 art and design technology programme students.

Among those present for the presentation were village chief Sata Najoi, and Bung Podad Hiking Trail and Kampung Peros Homestay chairman Joseph Jiep Sayon.
