KUCHING, 24 September: A total of 17 new seats in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) are expected to be unused for the upcoming state elections (PRN), said Election Commission (EC) Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun.

He said the period of completion of the review of the boundaries of the seats involved will take longer than February 2027 i.e. when the mandate of the Sarawak State Government expires.

"DUN Sarawak's maturity is in February 2027, so based on the work process that we have to go through I expect we will not have time to use this number of new seats in the upcoming PRN", he said.

He said this to reporters after visiting the Sarawak State Confined Seminal Studies (KSP) exhibition site at North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) here, today.

In July last year, the Sarawak DUN passed the State Legislative Assembly (Membership Composition) Bill 2025 to add 17 new seats, bringing the total number of seats to 99.

Currently, Sarawak has 82 DUN seats.

Meanwhile, Ramlan said SPR had received 18 protests against the Sarawak State SPK so far involving various issues including changing the voting district.

"There are also some protests over the name of certain DUNs in Sarikei, Bintulu and Sibu areas. We'll evaluate and detail this later", he said. - TVS
