LUNDU, Sept 27: Biawak border post will be upgraded to strengthen economic ties between Sarawak and Borneo, Indonesia, especially in the context of ASEAN regional economic development.

Sarawak Prime Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the upgrade of the border post would open up space for closer business ties between Sarawak and Kalimantan.

The effort, Johari said, is part of a strategy to expand the cross-border economic network in Borneo.

"We will expand the border post in Biawak and it will be a channel of cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia and of course its impact on Sarawak. This line will be an economic network", he said while addressing the 2026 Batang Kayan Lundu Regatta Suspension Meeting here today.

Brother Johari added that the enhancement of economic ties is also in line with efforts to strengthen cooperation between Sarawak and Kalimantan in the context of ASEAN development.

He said that he had recently received a visit from the Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce with his delegation to discuss efforts to create Borneo's economic cooperation network.

"Borneo's economic cooperation chain will be linked to the ASEAN region's economy. These are new opportunities, cooperation opportunities that will create deeper development in us boosting our economy", he said.

According to Brother Johari, stronger cross-border ties could create new opportunities for Sarawak through business and trade networks with the Kalimantan region.

He added that efforts to strengthen economic ties with Indonesia should also be seen as part of Sarawak's preparation for regional economic development.

Brother Johari assured that Sarawak will continue to leverage its strategic position in Borneo to expand economic cooperation with neighbouring countries and the ASEAN region. -TVS
