KUCHING, June 19: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today paid tribute to the late Datuk Kamil Misuari, describing him as a constant source of strength and encouragement for his wife, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, throughout her years in public service and leadership.
Speaking to reporters after paying his last respects to Kamil at the family residence today, Abang Johari extended his condolences to Nancy and her family over the loss of her husband.
“On the passing of the late Kamil, we extend our condolences to Datuk Seri Nancy’s family on the loss of her beloved husband.
“We pray that he will be among the righteous and be gathered with those who are faithful,” he said. An audio recording of his remarks was later shared with DayakDaily.
The Premier also expressed sympathy to Nancy, who is the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development and Santubong MP, urging her to remain steadfast in facing the difficult period ahead.
“We sympathise with Datuk Seri Nancy in this trial, and God willing, with patience, life must go on,” he added.
Asked about Kamil’s role in supporting Nancy’s political journey, Abang Johari said the late businessman had played an important role behind the scenes, particularly in encouraging her welfare work and responsibilities as a woman leader and Cabinet minister.
“He had given a lot of encouragement to Datuk Seri Nancy in the field of welfare and also in carrying out her responsibilities as a woman leader and a minister.
“I am confident that Datuk Seri Nancy will continue to carry out her responsibilities with the spirit she has and with inspiration from the late Kamil,” he said.
Kamil passed away at the age of 65 at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (June 18).
His remains arrived in Kuching early this morning and were taken to Nancy’s official residence in Petra Jaya, where family members, friends, political leaders and members of the public gathered to pay their final respects before he was laid to rest at the Samariang Muslim Cemetery today.
Born in Lahad Datu, Sabah, on March 30, 1961, Kamil was of Idaahan descent and held a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
He began his career in the banking sector in 1984 and spent nearly 24 years serving in several financial institutions, including UMBC Bank, Sabah Bank, Bank Utama and RHB Bank, rising through the ranks to senior management before taking early retirement in 2008.
He later became a director and shareholder in several companies and also served on the board of Sabapak Eco Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Sabah Parks Board of Trustees.
Beyond his professional achievements, Kamil was actively involved in community organisations, serving as patron of the Persatuan Seni Budaya Ida’an Segama in Lahad Datu, while also being a member of the Rotary Club of Kuching Central and the Sabah Shooting Association.
Nancy and Kamil were married in 1985 and were blessed with three children — Faeroz, Farouk and Bibi Freka.
Throughout Nancy’s decades-long career in public service and politics, Kamil was often regarded as a steadfast supporter who stood by her side as she rose through the ranks to become one of Sarawak’s most prominent political figures.
Among those who paid their last respects were State Cabinet ministers, elected representatives, senior government officials and community leaders, who offered condolences and prayers for the bereaved family. — DayakDaily
