BETONG, Sept 25: Boxing clinic organized under the Sarawakku Sayang Program (SKS) Betong became one of the platforms to introduce boxing to the community, thus bringing more new talent in the sport.
The promotion of the clinic is part of efforts by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development (MYSED) to expand the talent pool of state boxing athletes especially among the younger generation.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development Sarawak, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said that concrete and surrounding areas have the potential to give birth to boxing athletes, besides having an iconic sport which can be an inspiration to society.
"We want to see more athletes coming into the sport so we have a bigger talent pool.
"In boxing there are different categories like featherweight, bantamweight and so on. We need athletes to fill these categories, and then we have a wider chance of winning", he said.
He said that the efforts to expand the talent pool are also important in enhancing Sarawak's performance on future sporting issues, taking into account increasing competition from other states.
He said the boxing clinic under SKS Betong also gave the local community an opportunity to take a closer look and meet Sarawak's boxing icons.
Among the names expected to be involved are former country boxer Sapok Biki and several local boxing icons. - TVS
