KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is well-positioned to take its next step in Sarawak’s energy transformation, with a strong foundation and capable workforce in place as Datuk Sharbini Suhaili prepares to retire after nearly a decade leading the company.

Sharbini, who was appointed SEB Group chief executive officer in November 2016, said his greatest takeaway from his tenure was not only the company’s achievements and major projects, but the people who had driven its progress.

“When asked what I will miss most about my role as SEB Group CEO, the answer is the people of Sarawak Energy.

“Whether at power stations, project sites or in field operations, their dedication ensures that the organisation continues to move forward,” he said.

He said this in his farewell speech here on Wednesday (Oct 7) during an appreciation dinner held in conjunction with his retirement on Oct 31.

The event was graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Sharbini also expressed his appreciation to Abang Johari for the trust placed in SEB throughout his tenure, saying the company had been given a broader mandate beyond its traditional role as a utility provider.

This included supporting Sarawak’s full electrification target, advancing hydrogen research, developing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and driving digital transformation.

During his tenure, Sharbini led SEB’s acquisition of the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) and strengthened the company’s financial position while maintaining international investment-grade credit ratings and a domestic AAA rating.

He also oversaw the strengthening of a health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) culture across the organisation.

Under his leadership, the Bakun HEP received the 2025 Blue Planet Award from the International Hydropower Association (IHA), as well as Silver Certification under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, further enhancing SEB’s international standing in sustainable hydropower.

Meanwhile, Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad president and Group CEO Datuk Ruslan Abdul Ghani has been appointed as SEB Group CEO-designate.

He assumed the role on Sept 1, before taking over fully as SEB Group Chief Executive Officer on Nov 1, following Sharbini’s retirement at the end of October.
