KUCHING: Researchers have been challenged to explore developing rice with lower carbohydrate content as Sarawak looks beyond increasing production to producing healthier food.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said research into paddy varieties should also consider the health implications of the rice consumed by Malaysians.
He suggested exploring varieties similar to basmati rice as one possible direction in developing rice with lower carbohydrate content.
“Perhaps you, as scientists, can explore how to produce rice with less sugar.
“From a health perspective, if rice has too much carbohydrate, it can lead to other problems such as diabetes.
“But if we can produce rice like basmati or rice with less carbohydrate, then Malaysians will be healthier. Hopefully, we can produce healthy food, and Malaysia can have that brand of producing healthy food,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the 2nd Sarawak Rice Conference (SARICON II) 2026 at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here today (Oct 6).
Abang Johari said research and scientific expertise would become increasingly important as Sarawak seeks to increase its paddy and rice production.
He said the state also needs a new generation equipped with knowledge in modern agriculture, agricultural science and life sciences to apply new technologies in farming.
“That is why children of farmers who cannot go to university because of financial circumstances now have access to free tertiary education in Sarawak, including the children of farmers.
“Those who take disciplines in agriculture, modern agriculture, modern science, agricultural science and life sciences can study further at degree level up to Master’s.
“We hope they will apply new technology in running their farms,” he said.
