Zulhaidah says food was not merely a basic necessity, but was also closely linked to beliefs, culture, and the personal and communal sensitivities of various groups.
MIRI (Jan 24): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sibuti deputy branch chief Zulhaidah Suboh has urged all parties, particularly political leaders, to exercise prudence and mutual respect when discussing food-related issues in Malaysia’s multicultural society.
She said food was not merely a basic necessity, but was also closely linked to beliefs, culture, and the personal and communal sensitivities of various groups.
According to Zulhaidah, any actions that use food-related issues as a form of provocation, ridicule the dietary practices of other communities, or contradict an individual’s beliefs could spark tension and undermine social harmony.
“Every individual and community has their own dietary guidelines based on their respective religions, cultures, and beliefs.
“This must be respected by all parties,” she said in a statement on Friday.
Her remarks were made in connection with a statement by Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin, who voiced out his frustration in Parliament over ongoing criticisms directed at individuals who consumed pork, and called for respect for different food choices.
Zulhaidah further stressed that differences in dietary practices should not be made the subject of jokes or ridicule, nor used as a tool to divide society.
She also reminded the public to avoid negative stereotypes against any community, emphasising that unity can only be fostered through mutual respect, polite communication, and a willingness to understand differences.
“As Malaysians, we have a responsibility to make Sarawak an example of a united, appreciative and mature society in managing diversity,” she said.
Zulhaidah hailed unity as a key strength that must be preserved, noting that respecting one another’s food choices reflected respect for humanity and the dignity of every individual.
