KOTA KINABALU (Jan 8): Police here have uncovered a new method of smuggling drugs in modified chopping boards.

The discovery was made following a tip-off and subsequent raid on a house in Taman Donggongon, Penampang at around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

“Narcotics police raided the house and found 40 packages of syabu. The drugs were packed in plastic bags and sealed inside chopping boards,” Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun told a press conference.

He explained the chopping boards were cut into two whereby one part was hollowed out to store the drugs before being joined back together.

“This is the first modus operandi of this sort we have encountered,” he said.

Jauteh said two men from Peninsular Malaysia, aged 28 and 29, were nabbed with 39.5kg of syabu worth around RM1.264 million.

Both suspects also tested positive for drugs.

According to him, the suspects had come to Sabah to collect the drugs, which were transported via sea courier services.

He said the drugs are believed to be for distribution in Sabah and could supply up to 160,000 addicts.

Meetings on the new modus operandi will be held with other agencies, including courier companies and Bukit Aman narcotics counterparts, he said.

The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
