KUCHING, Sept. 24: Malaysia-China relations develop into an important partnership based on mutual respect, economic cooperation and close ties between the people of both countries.

Sarawak's Prime Minister, His Highness Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said for Sarawak, the relationship with China has a deeper dimension as Chinese society has been an important part of the state's history and development for generations.

"The contributions of the Chinese community in trade, industry, education, professional services and community development have shaped Sarawak as we know it today", he said.

He said this through the text of a speech read by Deputy Prime Minister Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, at a reception to mark the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China hosted by the Consulate General of China here tonight.

Johari said that Sarawak's approach in international relations is to welcome cooperation that can create shared values and make meaningful contributions to the development of people.

He said, Sarawak is now entering an important phase of transformation through the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS) which is a long-term goal to make the state developed and high-income by 2030.

"China remains an important friend of Sarawak. China's power in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, digital technology, infrastructure and innovation complement many of Sarawak's development priorities", he said.

According to him, among the main priorities of PCDS 2030 is green and sustainable economic development, with Sarawak having large renewable energy sources, in particular hydro power.

He said Sarawak is also exploring new opportunities in the fields of hydrogen, solar energy, energy storage and other clean technologies.

"China's energy and technological capabilities can complement Sarawak's resources and aspirations, while Sarawak provides a strategic platform for companies looking to explore opportunities in the ASEAN region", he said.

Brother Johari said China's extensive experience in industrial development and the formation of an integrated economic ecosystem also opens up space for enhanced cooperation between Chinese companies and Sarawak's private sector.

"We welcome cooperation that enables local companies, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to participate in the new value chain", he said.

At the same time, he encouraged the people of Sarawak to explore opportunities in the Chinese market because successful partnerships should benefit both parties.

He said Sarawak's geographical position in central Borneo and within the ASEAN region also gave the state an opportunity to become a platform for broader economic ties between China and Southeast Asia.

He said, with renewable energy sources, improved connectivity, expanding digital infrastructure and a strong industrial base, Sarawak is able to play a more active role in regional supply chains.

"We welcome closer cooperation with Chinese companies and institutions that see ASEAN as the next growth destination", he said.
