LIMBANG, 7 Oct: Implementation of free higher education initiative by the Government of Sarawak starting this year is expected to involve spending over RM1 billion from time to time.
Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development of Sarawak, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said that despite the high cost, the state government remains committed to strengthen the education system for the future of Sarawak's children in producing quality human capital.
"Sarawak is indeed focused on education and the Prime Minister of Sarawak provides allowances for those who study at Sarawak's universities free of charge to the children of Sarawak.
"This year, the Government of Sarawak is spending around RM500 million on free education initiatives and it is likely to increase from time to time to reach over RM1 billion.
"This is to ensure that Sarawak has sufficient manpower to fill future employment opportunities focused on the technology sector, including green energy and new technologies pioneered by Prime Minister Sarawak", he said.
Members of the National Assembly (ADUN) Bukit Kota said this while addressing the Intergenerational Mind Image Program in conjunction with the celebration of the Day of Balanced Gold Citizens, organized by the Center for Balanced Gold Citizen Activities (PAWE) at the Balanced Hall today.
In attendance were representatives of the Balanced Resident, Aspalela Sahmoni; the Balanced Division Social Welfare Officer, Gadong Crocodile; and the Chairman of the Balanced PAWE, Penghulu Ang Chiw Kiam.
Abdul Rahman said that the investment in education sector is also focused on human capital development, especially in technology, green energy and new sectors which are expected to drive Sarawak's economic growth.
According to him, the gradual increase in allocation is expected to expand educational opportunities for Sarawak's children, as well as ensure that they have knowledge, skills and qualifications appropriate to job market demand.
He said that the initiative reflects Sarawak's commitment to developing a competitive local workforce capable of filling high-skilled employment opportunities in line with Sarawak's development agenda. -TVS
