KUCHING, Sept. 26: The culture of science through education, research and innovation has become an important foundation in supporting Sarawak's transition towards a knowledge-based economy.

Sarawak Prime Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the power of people's thinking and society's ability to master science must be accompanied by physical development as well as technological progress.

"Indeed, the progress of a region cannot be seen only through its buildings, highways or economic values. It is also measured through the level of people's thinking, the strength of its scientific institutions and society's ability to document experiences and knowledge to be passed on to future generations", his speech text was read by Deputy Prime Minister Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at the inaugural ceremony of the 2021/2025 Premier Sarawak Best Book Awards in Kuching on Friday.

Johari said Sarawak is now heading towards a more innovative, technological and knowledge-based economy, including in the fields of digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI) and green technology.

"While technology is a major driver of this transformation, science remains the foundation for all progress to be achieved.

"A society that reads will give birth to a society that thinks. Thinking societies will be more prepared to create solutions to future challenges", he said.

Thus, it is imperative that books should be seen not as mere reading material but as a vehicle for shaping thought, recording experience and building civilization.

The approach is in line with Sarawak's emphasis on strengthening human capital and intellectual capacity as part of the state transformation agenda.

In this context, scientific publishing and documentation not only play a role in preserving the history and experience of society but can also be an important source of reference in shaping generations that are more prepared for future technological and economic changes. - TVS
