From the infectious rhythms of ska to the raw energy of alternative music, SKA PICNIC 2026 is set to bring Sarawak’s independent music community together for an afternoon and evening of local talent.

Organised by Damai Escape Park, the mini concert will take place on October 17 at the recreational park in Santubong, featuring three established Sarawak bands — United Kids Of Oi!, Saturday Heroes and Drasska.

They will be joined by Kuala Lumpur Ska Syndicate, a guest act from the capital, broadening a line-up that celebrates local musicians while connecting Sarawak’s music scene with performers from outside the state.

Running from 2 pm to 11 pm, the event combines live performances with recreational activities and camping, offering music lovers a relaxed outdoor gathering.

Kuala Lumpur Ska Syndicate

A platform for local sounds

The event puts Sarawak’s independent music scene in the spotlight, giving local bands an opportunity to reach new audiences and strengthen connections within the music community.

The addition of Kuala Lumpur Ska Syndicate further broadens the line-up, connecting musicians and audiences from different parts of Malaysia.

The enduring appeal of ska

The event’s name points to a musical tradition that originated in Jamaica.

Emerging in Jamaica in the late 1950s, ska blended local traditions such as mento with American rhythm and blues and jazz. Its distinctive offbeat rhythms later influenced reggae and other genres.

In Malaysia, ska remains part of the independent music scene alongside related genres such as reggae, rocksteady and ska-punk.

Kuala Lumpur Ska Syndicate is among the acts continuing to explore these sounds. SKA PICNIC will also mark the final stop on the band’s five-location Malaysian tour, which has taken the collective from Kuala Lumpur to Selangor, Penang and Sabah before concluding in Santubong.

Saturday Heroes

More than a concert

Beyond live music, SKA PICNIC will feature boxing sparring, an ice bath challenge and karaoke. Visitors can also enjoy the outdoor surroundings and spend time with friends.

Camping is available for visitors who wish to stay beyond the concert.

Damai Escape Park hopes to establish SKA PICNIC as an annual event, providing a regular platform for Sarawak’s local bands while encouraging greater appreciation of the state’s music and alternative culture.

Tickets are priced at RM30, while campsite reservations cost RM60. Interested visitors can contact Hartanty Hardy at 016-8000266 or Mahathir at 018-9868192 for tickets and camping arrangements.
