BINTULU, Sept. 28: Government of Sarawak will expand the use of drone technology in agriculture sector through training to youth and farmers through Aviation Academy.
Sarawak Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that mastery of drone technology is essential in modernising agricultural management and reducing reliance on human energy.
He said that young people and farmers need to be exposed to the drones so that they can be used in a wide range of agricultural activities.
"We now have what's called the Flying Academy and it will teach our children, including farmers how to manage drones because drones use pilots.
"And of course we're going to encourage our children to use drones in addition to the width of drones, other machines", he said.
He said this during his speech at the inauguration of Sarawak Agrofest 2026 at Bintulu Old Airport, here today.
Johari added that the use of technologies such as drones, machinery and robotics is part of a new approach to increase productivity and reduce human energy consumption in agriculture sector.
He said the application of technology needs to be supported by science and expertise so that agriculture sector can develop as a high-value commercial industry.
According to him, the use of technology also allows farming yields to be managed more efficiently, thus increasing entrepreneurial incomes and contributing to the state's economic growth. - TVS
