KUCHING, 25 September: The Bahá'í community of Sarawak has continued to play a role in strengthening unity, harmony and mutual respect among the multi-racial and religious communities of the state throughout its 75 years of existence.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the community contribution also supports efforts to build a stronger, more inclusive and united society.
"Through this unique institution, the Sarawak government continues to support religious communities in carrying out activities and strengthening inter-religious relations for the benefit of all Sarawakis. The Bahá'í teachings on unity are also consistent with a principle close to the life of Sarawak society, which is that unity does not mean diversity, but unification in diversity.
"The diversity of racial, religious, linguistic and cultural traditions are among the greatest forces in Sarawak, yet its people remain united through their identity as citizens of Sarawak, mutual respect and shared aspirations for peace, stability and prosperity.
"This principle is also in line with the efforts of the Government of Sarawak through the Unit for Interreligious Affairs (UNIFOR) to unite people while celebrating diversity that enriches society", he said during a speech at the Sambutan Naw-ruz Sarawak Level and 75th Anniversary of Baha'i Community In Sarawak in Kuching on Friday.
The text of his speech was read by Sarawak Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian who represented him at the ceremony.
Brother Johari said the harmony enjoyed by Sarawak did not happen by chance, but was nurtured over generations through respect for one another, tolerance and appreciation of different beliefs and traditions.
According to him, the progress of Sarawak should not be measured solely by economic growth, infrastructure development and technological advancement, but also taking into account people's strength, community resilience and values that unite society.
He said meaningful development is development that enhances people's well-being, strengthens family institutions, builds caring communities and provides opportunities for each individual to contribute to common interests.
The congratulations were also accompanied by the presence of the elderly Sarawak State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. And my lord Jaafar's Junaidi and his wife, Toh Aunt Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
