MIRI, Sept 28: The facilities in the 30-year-old Miri Public Park will be upgraded and restored through a RM3.8 million project approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the provision would allow for a variety of recreational and ecotourism facilities in the park to be added so as to make it more comfortable and safe for people to use.

He said the scope of the project included construction and upgrading of suspension bridges, observation towers, resting platforms, pedestrian paths, handrails and safety fences.

"The order includes slope and drainage work, gazebo construction, information centre and public toilets, as well as mechanical and electrical works, landscape as well as demolition and site cleaning", he said at a press conference after the Meeting of Miri Municipal Council (MBM), here today.

According to him, the project is important in ensuring that facilities at Miri Public Park remain in good condition, in line with its role as a recreation area and tourist attraction of the city.

In the same development, MOTAC also approved RM430,000 for water feature restoration work, water runoff, pump system and related facilities at Miri City Fan.

The allocation is said to be necessary given that the facility at Miri City Fan is also about 30 years old and has not undergone major maintenance work before.

"We greatly appreciate the support of MOTAC as this provision allows long-standing facilities to be restored and added well.

"It is important not only for the benefit of society, but also to improve the experience of visitors coming to Miri", he added.

Both projects are expected to strengthen recreational facilities and ecotourism attractions in Miri, as well as ensure long-standing public assets continue to be utilized in the future. - TVS
