SARIKEI, Sept. 23: The government is planning the construction of new connecting roads in the district to strengthen interregional ties as well as open up more economic and agricultural development opportunities.
Deputy Minister of Supply and Commodities, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the infrastructure is important to facilitate population movement, improve access to suburban areas as well as boost local economic activity.
He said that among the projects being considered is the construction of Sarikei Bypass Road, a 4.95-kilometer long road connecting the city of Sarikei with the suburb across Batang Rajang.
"I take this seriously because better road facilities can stimulate the opening of new areas for agricultural activities, thus supporting efforts to strengthen the modern agro sector.
"Sareikei is known among the important food production areas in Sarawak and has great potential for further development", he said after delivering MRP grants to 15 NGOs here today.
The aid is channelled to help recipients implement various programmes and meet the needs of their respective communities.
Tiong Sii said all plans and pledges to the community will continue to be given attention so that they can be implemented in stages according to local needs.
"In this regard, I would like to extend my appreciation to the Prime Minister of Sarawak, His Highness Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his continued support for state development especially in DUN Repok area and Sarikei Parliament", he said. - TVS
