KUCHING, 24 Sept: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) approach is among the key drivers of Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) in producing skilled caregiver power, with a target of 50,000 professional caregivers by 2030.
Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that through the TVET-based training programme, as many as 2,000 participants were targeted to attend the training this year in an effort to expand the group of guards who have special skills and qualifications.
According to him, the program has been started since 2023 with the involvement of 400 participants, followed by 485 participants last year, before expanding further to the public including those outside ministry institutions.
"Now we're aiming for 2,000caregiverwho will be trained. So far there are 885 and we're opening up space again to outsiders from our institution", he said as he was interviewed by the media after completing the 2026 Student Appraisal Meeting of the Technical Secondary Schools of Singkat, here today.
Nancy said that the use of TVET approaches is important to ensure participants not only have care experience, but also are provided with the theoretical knowledge and practical training needed to manage those in need of care.
"It's not just a regular care assignment like previously thought, but rather we give them physical training and theory so they have the skills to properly care for individuals who need help", he said.
He added that the effort also involves collaboration with universities and private parties to strengthen training modules, as well as ensuring that the care field is recognized as a professional career with wide opportunities both nationally and internationally. - TVS
