In a statement tonight, DBKU said the overall Car Free Morning programme will continue as usual without the parade and Aerodance activities.
KUCHING (April 4): The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has cancelled the Raya Parade and Aerodance activities scheduled for tomorrow’s Kuching Car Free Morning at Padang Merdeka, following concerns that the event could disrupt Easter Sunday services at the neighbouring St Thomas Cathedral.
In a statement tonight, DBKU said the overall Car Free Morning programme will continue as usual without the parade and Aerodance activities.
“DBKU apologises for any inconvenience caused and greatly appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding in this matter,” DBKU said.
Earlier, Anglican Bishop of Kuching (Sarawak and Brunei) Datuk Danald Jute, who is also chairman of the Association of Churches in Sarawak, had urged DBKU to review the programme, citing online debate and concerns over the timing coinciding with one of the most significant days in the Christian calendar.
He noted a previous incident where loud music from the programme disrupted church services.
“I have been in contact with the Minister-In-Charge of DBKU, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman to express our concern and appeal for his understanding. He has been gracious and promised to speak with the organisers.
“We trust and hope that DBKU will do the right thing,” said Danald in a statement on his Facebook page.
