KUCHING, 8 Oct: Four major projects under the Sarawak Urban Forum (SUF) 2.0 Legacy will strengthen sustainable urban development in Kuching by focusing on public space provision, green grids, waste management and sustainable resource use.
The projects are the Kuching Square Festival, Kuching Park Connector, 3RKU - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Kuching as well as Buluh Gallery and Garden which were implemented through the involvement of North Kuching City Council (DBKU) with related agencies.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Department of Premier (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agency, North Kuching City Council and Islamic Affairs), Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the SUF 2.0 legacy project is not just physical development, but it is designed to ensure that the facilities and networks of cities developed will benefit society in the long term as well as future generations.
"These four projects are among the legacy projects highlighted in conjunction with Sarawak Urban Forum (SUF) 2.0 which is scheduled to take place at the end of October, with the theme 'Future-Ready Cities: Building a Resilient Future - Collaborate, Adapt and Thrive,'" he said.
He said so at the Pre-Launch of Sarawak Urban Legacy Project Forum 1.0 and SUF Legacy Project 2.0 Media Conference in Kuching, today.
The proposed Festival Square in the Java Street area covers approximately 1,230 square metres and will serve as a flexible public space for community, recreational and cultural activities, including celebrations of Gawai Dayak, Holidays and Christmas.
Kuching Park Connector focuses on the creation of interconnected green networks to promote active mobility, recreation and use of green space in everyday life.
For waste management, 3RKU expands community access and participation in reduction, reuse and recycling practices through 14 Community 3R Stations located in schools, residential areas, mosques and community facilities around North Kuching.
Meanwhile, Gallery and Botanical Garden were developed by DBKU in collaboration with the Sarawak Wood Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) through RMK13 as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable urban development.
The four projects are in line with the aspirations of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), especially in strengthening green economies, conservation of natural resources and development of greener and more livable cities.
