PUTRAJAYA, Oct 7: The monsoon transition phase is expected to begin on October 9 and continue until the end of October, marking the end of the Southwest Monsoon season that began on May 14.

The Director-General of Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip in a statement today said that during the phase, the country will receive weak winds from various directions which could encourage the formation of lightning storm clouds.

"These conditions typically bring heavy rainfall and lightning as well as strong winds over a short period of time, especially in the evenings and early nights in most western and interior parts of the Peninsula as well as western Sabah and Sarawak.

"These weather phenomena have the potential to cause flash floods, waterfalls, falling trees and damage to unstable structures", he said.

He said that with the end of the Southwest monsoon season, the impact of cross-border dust from neighbouring countries is expected to gradually diminish due to changes in wind direction.

In this regard, the public is advised to be more vigilant throughout the period and be aware of weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia through its official website, myCuaca mobile app and official social media.

The public can also contact the Department's 1-300-22-1638 Hotline for any further inquiries.
