MIRI, 29 September: Sarawak's Foreign Workers Transformation Approach System (FWTA) was introduced to package the management of foreign labour through more efficient, transparent and based process compliance and worker welfare.

Adviser in Sarawak's Premier Department, Datu Ken Leben said the transformation was essential to support labour needs across various industrial sectors as Sarawak's economy developed.

"As we accelerate mega infrastructure projects, develop the digital economy and modernize the agriculture sector, the need for a well-organized, efficient and resilient workforce becomes increasingly important.

"While our main focus remains on local skills improvement, retraining and talent empowerment, we also need to recognise the current economic reality that foreign labour management remains an important component in supporting operational and industrial growth", he said.

He said this while addressing the SCSIMon Industry Update (Miri) Programme at the Sarawak Public Service Innovation Month Meeting here today.

He added that the old approach in foreign labour management should be improved to address issues related to administrative constraints, delays in control processes and policy inconsistencies.

"FWTA is not just a digital upgrade, it's a fundamental change in the way we manage, process and integrate foreign labour into the industrial sector", he said.

According to him, the transformation focuses on three main pillars: efficiency, transparency and compliance and employee well-being.

"The application process will be coordinated and automated to reduce waiting times, in addition to providing a clear, traceable and uniform framework for employers.

"At the same time, we want to ensure that labour practices comply with strict international standards in order to protect the reputation of industry and workers' well-being", he explained.

He further clarified that industry players are encouraged to continue providing views, operational feedback and suggestions for improvement to ensure the implementation of FWTA meets real needs in the field.

He said that cooperation between government and industry is essential to ensure the transition to the new system can be carried out smoothly without affecting business operations. - TVS
