KUCHING, 8 Oct: Java Street will be transformed into a new public space providing recreational facilities, community interaction and venue for celebration reception through the Sarawak Urban Forum (SUF) Legacy Project 2.0.

The project implemented by North Kuching City Council (DBKU) with the cooperation and support of PETRONAS Sarawak as sponsor emphasizes on providing more attractive, cheerful and comfortable spaces for a diverse age group.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agency, North Kuching City Council and Islamic Affairs), Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that the redevelopment of Java Road is also focused on providing space for the use of gold citizens, youth and children.

According to him, Java Road is planned to be among the main venues for celebratory receptions in Kuching Belt especially for large celebrations involving local communities.

"Jawa Street is also planned to be one of the main venues for celebratory receptions in Kuching Belt especially when there are large celebrations involving local communities.

"The facilities and space provided in the area will provide an opportunity for Kuching residents as well as communities of all backgrounds to gather and celebrate festivals such as Holidays, Labor Day, Christmas and Chinese New Year in a more comfortable and lively atmosphere", he said.

He said so at the Sarawak Urban Forum 1.0 Legacy Project Pre-Launch Council and SUF 2.0 Legacy Project Media Conference in Kuching, today.

The plan makes Java Street not just a recreational space, but rather a public space that the community can use for joint activities and major celebrations.

In terms of facilities, the project also implements new technologies and sustainability elements through smart toilet provision as well as gray water recycling systems to optimize water use.

Kuching's identity is also highlighted through the proposal to provide a replica of the cat as a symbol and attraction to visitors.

The Java Road Legacy Project is among the key components of SUF 2.0 organized by DBKU from 24 to 27 October, continuing the first SUF project in 2024 after the success of Malaysian Urban Forum (MUF) 5.0 in Kuching in 2023.-TVS
