THE Sarawak government has allocated RM650 million for Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS) under its 2027 Budget to help eligible recipients cope with the rising cost of living.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said B40 households would receive RM1,100, while senior citizens and eligible singles would receive RM600 and RM375 respectively.

He said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remained committed to protecting vulnerable groups, empowering families and ensuring that no Sarawakian was left behind.

“These measures provide immediate relief, ensuring that families can meet their essential needs with dignity and stability. The strength of a society is measured not by the wealth of its few, but by the dignity and security afforded to its many,” he said when tabling the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 today (Oct 12).

Beyond direct financial assistance, Abang Johari said the state government would continue its cradle-to-grave welfare framework to support Sarawakians throughout their lives.

This includes RM15 million for the Endowment Fund Sarawak and RM5 million for Bantuan Ibu Bersalin next year to support mothers and children.

Another RM45.9 million would be allocated to the Sarawak Welfare Department for assistance programmes, including Bantuan Am, Bantuan Belia-Beliawanis, Bantuan Kanak-Kanak and Bantuan OKU Tidak Berupaya Bekerja.

For disaster assistance, RM13.6 million would be set aside under Bantuan Bencana to provide immediate relief for food, shelter and education.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari said RM8.5 million would be allocated to continue the Stage Bus Fare Subsidy, with fares maintained at RM1 per trip and RM30 for an unlimited monthly pass.

“With fares kept low at RM1 per trip and a RM30 unlimited monthly pass, we have significantly reduced the daily cost of travel for working families,” he said.

Abang Johari added that the subsidy would continue to make public transport affordable and inclusive while easing the financial burden on Sarawakians.
