SARAWAK has allocated RM1.5 million under Budget 2027 to undertake a masterplan study for space and aerospace development.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is advancing strategic programmes in aerospace and space technology, laying the foundation for satellite systems, remote sensing, aerospace applications and emerging space-related research.

He said the masterplan study will guide the state’s long-term strategy in the sector.

“These measures are anchored by the Sarawak Space Agency (SSA), which is being entrusted to spearhead the development of Sarawak’s space sector.

“The SSA will also coordinate research, establish industry collaborations, and oversee initiatives such as the planned launch of Sarawak’s first nanosatellite by 2030 using CubeSat technology,” he said when tabling Budget 2027 on Monday (Oct 12).

Abang Johari added that RM42 million has been allocated under Budget 2027 for the preliminary development of the i-CATS main campus at Trombol.

He said the campus will serve as a catalyst for i-CATS’ transformation into a full-fledged university, strengthening Sarawak’s innovation ecosystem.

“Through i-CATS University College, industry-based learning, applied research, and professional certification will be intensified next year, with greater emphasis on aerospace and satellite systems,” he said.

Complementing these efforts, he said the Centre of Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) has launched its Aerospace Academy and established aviation and engineering programmes in collaboration with AIROD-ADC.

CENTEXS has also signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Angkasa-X, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Tsinghua University to develop talent in space technology, satellite engineering and aerospace research and development (R&D).

“These collaborations will accelerate human capital development and create pathways for Sarawakian graduates into globally recognised programmes.

“Together, i-CATS, CENTEXS, and SSA will nurture industry-ready talent, strengthen our aerospace ecosystem, and position Sarawak as a rising hub in high-growth, high-value industries of the future,” he said.
