KUCHING, Oct 14: Sarawak needs more specialists in science, especially biology, to harness the potential of forests as carbon absorbers and support economic development based on carbon trade.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the expertise is important for understanding the process of carbon absorption and oxygen production, in line with the advantages of Sarawak which has a vast area of tropical rainforest.
"It's a new economy because the parties that release carbon now have to pay. This is among the mechanisms that are shaping a new economy known as carbon trading.
"Therefore, we must have experts who are not only able to calculate numbers but also understand and measure aspects related to oxygen", he said while addressing the 2026 Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus Awards and Awards Dinner Ceremony, here last night.
He said the Sarawak government is also exploring and conducting experiments to produce hydrogen from water as part of efforts to develop cleaner alternative energy sources.
Brother Johari said Sarawak has a wide range of energy sources, including hydro, solar, biomass and natural gas, which can be utilized to support economic development and energy transition.
"If we have clean and renewable energy, we can help reduce the global warming that we're experiencing.
"To realize this, we need skilled energy that has at least a scientific foundation", he added.
According to him, the development of talent in science should be a priority for Sarawak's education policy to meet current economic needs including tackling climate change, ensuring food security and supporting the transition to clean energy. - TVS
