SARAWAK is stepping up efforts to become a regional trade and logistics hub, with RM8 million allocated in 2027 to develop a comprehensive ports masterplan.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the study would lay the foundation for a more efficient, integrated and future-ready port system to support the state’s expanding economy and growing trade volumes.
“Ports are vital gateways for Sarawak, connecting our industries, businesses and communities to domestic and global markets,” he said when tabling the Sarawak Budget 2027 today.
He said the state must ensure its port infrastructure could accommodate economic diversification and rising trade volumes.
Beyond ports, Sarawak is also planning a major expansion of its aviation infrastructure, including a proposed new Kuching International Airport designed to handle 15 million passengers annually.

The proposed airport will feature a 4,000-metre Code 4E runway and an integrated aerotropolis supporting aircraft maintenance, repair and air freight logistics.
An allocation of RM1 million has been set aside next year for the airport’s initial masterplan study.
The aviation expansion also includes upgrading regional and rural airports to improve connectivity, safety and economic opportunities.
The extended Limbang Airport runway, measuring 1,790 metres, will receive RM25 million in 2027, while RM11.5 million is allocated for the newly completed Bebuling Short Take-Off and Landing (STOLport), which has a 1,190-metre runway.
Abang Johari said these improvements would enhance airport capacity, strengthen rural mobility and support Betong’s agropolitan growth.
Meanwhile, RM32.8 million has been allocated for riverine landing facilities and maritime safety infrastructure in 2027.
The projects include vessel tracking management systems and aids to navigation along Sungai Miri and Kuala Baram, rebuilding the Kuala Baram Lighthouse, and upgrading the Sungai Sarawak Barrage and Shiplock.
