KUCHING, Sept. 28: Sarawak is not facing a huge teacher shortage in terms of total numbers, but still needs more teachers with certain options, especially for Science subjects.
Sarawak's Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the need for new teachers in Sarawak is currently estimated at around 1,000 people.
According to him, the main issue facing is not the total number of teachers, but rather the lack of teachers who have options that match the needs of specific subjects in school.
"We don't really have a shortage of teachers. The highest number is only about 1,000 people, but the lowest is teachers by choice because they are not available for every subject, especially science subjects", he said.
He said this when meeting with the media after the Sarawak Non-Formal Education Recognition Launch Council - Community Skills and Productivity here, today.
He said the recruitment of new teachers for Sarawak will be done through the Education Services Commission (SPP), which will submit bids to successful candidates.
However, he said that the parties have not yet received further information regarding the date of implementation of the acquisition.
He also pointed out that a part of the teachers needed are those who have the ability to teach more than one subject.
He said that the need for teachers in Sarawak is now more focused on matching teacher options with the needs of subjects in schools.
