SARAWAK’S trade rose 12.3 per cent to RM117.1 billion in the first seven months of 2026, driven by stronger exports.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said exports increased by 14.7 per cent to RM79.2 billion during the period, while imports rose by 7.6 per cent to RM38 billion.
He said the stronger export performance widened Sarawak’s trade surplus to RM41.2 billion.
“The improvement in Sarawak’s exports during the first seven months of this year was broad-based across our major commodities, reflecting gains in both volumes and values,” he said when tabling the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 on Monday (Oct 12).

Breaking down the export figures, he said crude petroleum export volumes increased by 1.5 per cent to 2.72 million tonnes during the seven-month period.
“However, the value of crude petroleum exports recorded a stronger increase of 13.7 per cent, supported by favourable global oil prices.”
He said Brent crude averaged around USD91 per barrel during the period, contributing to the higher export value.
He noted that liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports also recorded higher volumes and values, with export volumes increasing by 22.8 per cent to 16.44 million tonnes.
“The value of LNG exports rose by 19.8 per cent during the same period.”
Meanwhile, he said that crude palm oil (CPO) export volumes increased by 17.4 per cent to 2.43 million tonnes.
Abang Johari also reported stronger CPO production and improved productivity in Sarawak’s oil palm industry during the first seven months of the year.
“CPO production increased by 7.3 per cent to 2.5 million tonnes, alongside a 6.5 per cent improvement in fresh fruit bunch yields to 12.8 tonnes per hectare.
“The oil extraction rate reached 19.59 per cent, while CPO prices remained firm at around RM4,300 to RM4,450 per tonne during the period.
“Seasonal improvements in yields should sustain production, although weather conditions and commodity price movements remain key risks to the outlook,” he said.
Based on its export performance during the first seven months of 2026, he said that Sarawak ranked fourth among Malaysia’s exporting states, behind Pulau Pinang, Johor and Selangor.
He said the state’s export performance highlighted the contribution of resource-based activities to its economy.
“This strong performance underscores the resilience of Sarawak’s resource-based economy and its ability to generate substantial returns despite global market volatility.
“It also highlights the importance of continued economic diversification and value creation in sustaining Sarawak’s long-term growth,” he said.
