KUCHING:  The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MHAS) Kuching Branch hopes Sarawak Budget 2027 will prioritise sustainable funding for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), mental health prevention and community-based rehabilitation to ensure people living with mental health conditions receive continuous support.

MHAS Chairman, Dr Ng Boon Seng, speaking on behalf of the association, said consistent financial support was essential for NGOs to sustain their services, retain trained personnel and plan long-term programmes for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.

He said many NGOs relied on project-based grants, fundraising and public donations to cover operating costs, including staff salaries, premises rental, utilities, transportation and programme coordination.

“Predictable support, potentially over several years and subject to clear accountability and reporting requirements, would help organisations retain trained personnel, plan responsibly and provide consistent assistance,” he said.

The association also called for continued investment in mental health prevention through public awareness, early identification of distress and timely access to support. These efforts should involve families, schools, workplaces and community groups, including those in rural and underserved areas.

On rehabilitation, MHAS Kuching highlighted the importance of community-based services in helping individuals regain confidence, develop daily living and vocational skills, and work towards returning to education, employment and meaningful participation in society.

“Recovery includes the opportunity to regain independence, maintain relationships and participate meaningfully in community life,” Dr Ng said.

The association hopes Sarawak Budget 2027 will strengthen the mental health support system by ensuring NGOs can provide consistent services while expanding preventive initiatives and rehabilitation opportunities.

MHAS Kuching also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Sarawak Government, relevant agencies and community partners to promote mental wellbeing and help individuals in recovery rebuild their lives with dignity.
