KUCHING, 13 Oct: The Sarawak State Library (Amendment) Act 2026 has the potential to strengthen the role of the Sarawak State Library more clearly in terms of legislation through the introduction of definitions as well as functions of memorial archives.

Repok's Adhan Nagar (ADUN) Member of Parliament, Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, said it was a clearer manifestation to the Sarawak State Library in the management of historical materials, even being able to strengthen the young generation's understanding of the state heritage.

He said the initiative also has the potential to foster patriotism and identity amongst the people of Sarawak through preservation of material related to important figures and events in the state.

"The recognition of the definition and function of memorial archives gives a clear legislative mandate to the Sarawak State Library.

"In terms of collecting, storing, preserving and exhibiting historical materials related to important figures and events in Sarawak", he said.

He said this when discussing the Bill in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) of Sarawak, today.

Commenting further, he said the amendments also have the potential to improve administrative efficiency and implement management through phasing out approvals.

He also welcomed the clarification of the Minister's power to ensure that the strategic direction of the Sarawak State Library is always in line with public policy and aspirations of the State Government.

"However, the expertise and professionalism of the Board of Directors must continue to be used to ensure that every decision is made taking into account professional advice and views", he said.

He also stressed the importance of providing appropriate infrastructure, implementing digital technologies and involving skilled curators and archivists to ensure effective management of memorial archives.

That approach is obviously crucial to allowing historical materials to be presented in a more interactive, engaging and easily understandable way by society, especially the younger generation.

He said investments in the development and management of state information and heritage through the amendments were a strategic step for the benefit of the people of Sarawak.

"I am confident that the government will pay due attention to the financial needs for the development of the new memorial archives and necessary governance adjustments.

"With careful planning and effective implementation, these amendments will strengthen the Sarawak State Library and provide lasting benefits to the people of Sarawak", he said. - TVS
