KUCHING: The RM16.2 billion allocation to Sarawak under Budget 2027 should be channelled towards accelerating rural development, particularly improving roads, clean water supply, healthcare and education, says Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana.
He said rural communities deserve the same access to essential infrastructure, economic opportunities and quality public services as those in urban areas.
“I welcome the announcement of the RM16.2 billion allocation to Sarawak through Budget 2027. I hope this allocation will be utilised effectively to accelerate the state’s development, particularly in rural areas such as Ngemah,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted.
Anyi said road and bridge infrastructure remained among the pressing needs in his constituency, urging the government to expedite projects involving Jalan Batu Luking–Nanga Dap, Jalan SPS Nanga Ngungun and Jalan Ngungun–Pasar Ngemah.
He also called for an urgent solution to clean water supply problems along the Jalan Majau to Ngungun stretch, stressing that access to safe water should not remain a challenge for rural residents.
Telecommunications coverage, particularly at SPS Nanga Ngungun, should also be improved to provide communities with more stable internet access, he said.
On education and skills development, Anyi called for greater access to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) opportunities in Ngemah to equip young people with skills suited to employment needs and entrepreneurship.
He also urged the government to consider upgrading health clinic facilities and increasing the number of doctors, particularly at Klinik Nanga Jagau, to improve access to healthcare for local residents.
Schools with deteriorating infrastructure and those frequently affected by floods, including SK Ng Balingiau, should receive attention to ensure pupils can learn in a safe and conducive environment, he added.
Ayni also called for targeted assistance to smallholders to strengthen the agricultural sector, including oil palm planting assistance for eligible recipients, to help rural communities increase their incomes through sustainable economic activities.
Meanwhile, he urged the relevant authorities to implement appropriate flood mitigation measures in Pedai to reduce risks to residents and their property.
He stressed that the allocation should translate into tangible development projects rather than remain figures in the budget.
Anyi also called for stronger cooperation between the federal government, Sarawak government and relevant agencies to address rural communities’ needs effectively.
“Development in Sarawak must progress in tandem between urban and rural areas. We want every resident, including those in Ngemah, to enjoy better basic facilities, wider economic opportunities and a more secure future,” he said.
