SARAWAK needs a body to manage its historical archives more efficiently without relying entirely on the National Archives of Malaysia, said Daro assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad.
He said the state’s rich history required stronger preservation efforts to safeguard records of local figures, significant events and the development of Sarawak for future generations.
“Sarawak, with its rich history, needs an entity or body to manage its archives more efficiently without depending entirely on the National Archives of Malaysia,” he said when debating in support of the Sarawak State Library (Amendment) Bil, 2026 at the August House today (Oct 13).

Safiee said the proposed introduction of memorial archives alongside existing public archives would strengthen the preservation of Sarawak’s historical records, including the history of the DUN.
“Records are the collective memory of our multiethnic society,” he said.
On library administration, he said clearer coordination between the State Cabinet, the minister responsible and the library’s management board would streamline decision-making and reduce bureaucratic obstacles.
He said this would help digital literacy initiatives and community development programmes reach rural areas more quickly, including Daro, where a library, digital and innovation centre is being developed.
Safiee said the amendments would also allow the legal framework to adapt more readily to technological and administrative changes while clarifying ownership of library property to strengthen accountability and protect its assets.
“These amendments are not merely a technical update, but a clear manifestation of Sarawak’s commitment to ensuring that its knowledge and heritage institutions remain relevant, modern and resilient in facing the challenges of the digital era,” he said.
